I have come across a new product in the neverending quest for hair so long and full that it would make Rapunzel jealous—scalp brushes. The omnipresent algorithm has been putting them on all my social feeds, in these posts brands are hawking their products alongside vague claims of benefits. I am not immune to marketing and with my interest piqued, I reached out to Dendy Engelman, MD, a New York-based board-certified dermatologist for the details.
A regular hair brush is for styling and detangling a scalp brush is for massaging and treatment, it has comparatively longer and less densely packed bristles. According to Dr. Engelman a scalp brush “stimulates blood circulation to the scalp, helping deliver oxygen and nutrients to the hair follicles.” In doing so it improves the scalp’s overall health and environment which “may encourage hair growth,” Dr. Engelman tells InStyle.

Scalp brushes like Kitsch’s also improve hair growth because they “exfoliate the scalp…which helps enhance the absorption of hair products.” Dr. Engelman says to not use a scalp massager more than two-four times a week. As for technique, “for optimal results, massage in circular motions to improve circulation and prevent tangling.” There are essentially three methods, the first is “to use it on dry hair before shampooing, as exfoliation helps maximize cleansing.” The second is “to apply hair oils or serums and massage them into dry hair to enhance product penetration.” The third is to use a scalp brush while shampooing to remove deep buildup.

If you’re going the serum and scalp brusher route, Dr. Dendy advises looking for products with rosemary oil, castor oil, peppermint oil, caffeine, and niacinamide. These ingredients have a slew of benefits that include nourishment, improved circulation, invigoration of follicles, oil control, and buildup removal. For an all-in-one serum, Dr. Engelman likes Nulastin’s Vibrant Scalp Treatment. “It replenishes elastin in the hair follicles and plays a crucial role in anchoring hair at the root,” meaning less shedding. She also recommends it because it was specifically formulated to be applied with a scalp brush.
Incorporating this simple step into your routine could make all the difference for your hair’s growth and health. Shop more dermatologist-approved scalp brushes, below.
